Is It Time to Cash Out of ARLP?

May 28th, 2007 by Tom Lyons

With the recent run up of the markets over the past few months, I have decided to take a look at my real money position in Alliance Resource Partners LP. I purchased this stock on 2/27/2007 (the 500 point down day for the Dow) for the price of $35.22 a share. Since this time the stock has risen a considerable amount to $43.48 a share as of the close on 5/25/07. My investment in ARLP has given me a return over twenty percent in a very short time frame, and at this point I feel that it is wise to reevaluate this position and determine if it is time to sell and realize my gains or if I should continue holding the stock. Model Points to Semiconductors to Lead the Way

May 21st, 2007 by James Cullen

This weekend, I did a quick update of my quantitative model to see how earnings updates might have affected the list of the best stocks (you can view prior lists for March, April, and May. Although the most recent update I did isn’t fully complete, one theme I did notice emerging was that semiconductor stocks have established a sizable position in the top 25. Can I Bum a CG?

May 17th, 2007 by Tom Lyons

In light of school being over and my returning home I instantly noticed that a major part of my daily life has changed. For most people coming home from college starts with readjusting to having to deal with your parents telling you what to do, but for me the first thing that I noticed was that nobody in my family smoked. I personally do not smoke, but at school the vast majority of my friends do. As I began talking to my parents about this strange fact I started to wonder if smoking amongst teenagers and adults was still on the decline. After doing some research I found out that 2005 was the first year since 1997 that the percentage of adults that smoke had not dropped. I then began to wonder if cigarette companies are in the process of making a comeback. Read the rest of this entry »

Right now, two themes tend to dominate my stock selection: basic materials and healthcare; for the latter, specifically biotechnology. Here are a few stocks in that sector I like:

United Online’s Opposing Operating Conditions

May 16th, 2007 by Tom Lyons

I recently have taken an interest in the top 25 stock list that is published monthly by valuestockreports.com. The list is generated by performing a quantitative evaluation of around 1600 stocks per what the website states. The returns of the list have so far been very impressive with the March list beating the markets by 2.6% over a two month period. Since the list has done so well I decided to look on the April list for any stocks that caught my interest. One stock that did was United Online, ticker symbol UNTD. Read the rest of this entry »
